Do you need help figuring out where you stand on the grand scale? Your Body Mass Index will tell you, and it is really easy to calculate it yourself in the privacy of your own home! All you need to know is your height and weight!
Find your Body Mass Index
To figure out your Body Mass Index, you simply take your weight in kilograms and divide it by the square of your height in meters, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The number that you get tells you whether or not you are at a healthy weight.
According to WebMD, you are:
- Underweight if your number is less than 18.5
- Healthy weight if it is between 18.5 and 24.9
- Overweight if it is between 25 and 29.9
- Obese if it is 30 or higher
Every time you gain or lose weight, your Body Mass Index changes, so be sure to calculate often. Doing so can also keep you motivated when you are dieting or working out! Seeing those numbers move can boost confidence when clothes still do not fit right, or when you feel like your efforts are not working. If math is not your strong suit, don’t worry: The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute has a free Body Mass Calculator, so all you have to do is enter your numbers!
A good goal to have when dieting is to try to get to the category below your current one. For instance, if you have a Body Mass Index of 34.3, you could make it your goal to get down to 29.9. It may seem odd to celebrate being overweight, but going from obese to overweight is just one step on the journey to having a health amount of body fat!
Remember, obesity can cause many health problems, such as high blood pressure, heart attack, arthritis and Type 2 diabetes, among others. That is all the more reason to use this simple method to test yourself often and strive to be the healthiest that you can be!
